Friends and fans, I am thrilled to finally reveal the first StarWarsMicroMachines.wordpress.com free figure giveaway – LOBOT, Lando’s aide from the Empire Strikes Back!

My good friend and long-time Micro Machines fan Brian Webb painstakingly sculpted the original from clay – at actual size! He then made a mold and cast copies in resin, which he painstakingly painted by hand. I wish my camera could show you all the detail in each one of these figures – it’s stunning, right down to the folds in the clothing and details on the headpiece! Brian also designed the packaging to reflect the style of the old Micro Machines blister packs and window boxes. I made a few minor suggestions during the packaging design process, and Matthias Krizanits contributed some scans, but Brian deserves all the credit for what he has accomplished.

A Lobot figure was originally scheduled to be packaged with the Darth Vader Transforming Action Playset, but was scrapped in place of the Luke Skywalker figure. This is the first time a Lobot figure has been produced in the Micro Machines scale! Brian collected an abundance of background reference material, and decided to depict Lobot in a pose from one of the behind-the-scenes photos, where he is holding a small data pad! The packaging is brilliant – it is designed so that you can remove the figure,  just open the plastic case, unfold the base, and carefully pull Lobot down through the cardboard!

I’ve worked hard to bring you great content on this website, from exclusive interviews with behind-the-scenes people to rare Ralph McQuarrie artwork, but this project raises the bar in a way I could never have imagined. I’m truly honored to be the one to bring Brian’s amazing figure to you!

So, you must be asking yourself, how do you actually GET one of these? I had originally planned to give figures away at a Collector Track presentation at Celebration V, however my proposal wasn’t accepted (perhaps they’ll give me a stage at Celebration VI!). Brian and I talked it over, and we decided that these fan-made figures should still be given away FOR FREE to fans at Celebration V!

In order to get a figure, you will have to find ME at the convention, and say the secret phrase:

“THINK BIG, PLAY SMALL!”

I will be the guy with the ugly mug and this custom-made Galoob t-shirt!

I will only be at CV on FRIDAY and SATURDAY. The FREE figures will be ONE per “customer.” I will only have the Lobot figures at the convention; if you see me at a party, restaurant, after-party, after-after-party, or at Last Tour to Endor, I will NOT have the figs (but I’ll look forward to meeting you!). If demand is really high, I reserve the right to limit how often I give them out. Both Brian and I want as many Micro Machines fans as possible to get one of these amazing figures – absolutely FOR FREE! There are fewer than 30 Lobot figures to give away!

Star Wars Celebration V will be an amazing event! I can’t wait to meet YOU there! May the Force be with us all!

Man you are tough one to spot. Should we still be looking for you on Sat? Still have some of these?

8. Jad - August 16, 2010

Thanks everybody! Almost all of the Lobots were handed out to lucky fans. More were given out on Friday than on Saturday, possibly because there were just more people there on Saturday. Everyone who got a figure was very appreciative and loved the little Lobot guy, which made me feel wonderful! I met a lot of new faces, I hope anyone who did get a Lobot will email me so we can stay in touch!

Jad,
Was nice meeting you on Friday. I gave your card to my friend Monte Moore and I think he might be calling you about doing some figures for a card game him and a friend of ours are working on at this very moment. He is looking at cost, figure detail, how fast, etc. etc. So hopefully your interested. Give him some time to email you as he is super busy and thanks for the figure!

Very cool. Love the packaging.

11. Jad - August 21, 2010

Thanks everybody! Your kind words inspire me to keep improving the site. Steve, I will definitely look forward to hearing from Monte, though all the credit for the Lobot figure goes to Brian Webb. I hope something productive can come of this!

Got a chance to meet Jad at C5. Great guy !

Just getting back from vacation and catching up on things. I’ll send you the promised pics later this weekend.

Jad - August 21, 2010

Sounds good Bill, looking forward to seeing them!

Brian did an amazing job on this. The quality easily meets or exceeds Galoob-quality sculpting. It even feels just like one of their figures. Superb work!
